Reviews

“All Randy wanted was a simple part-time job. The Bread Company, a restaurant, seemed like the perfect place to work; it promised a safe, mindless job. But strange people claiming to be inspectors of one sort or another invade The Bread Company’s sanctuary, not to mention the odd characters who run the restaurant itself like Tabby the cat who manages it and the others, like Defense, Hero, Wisdom, and Intellect. Randy is swept up in an intergalactic adventure that demands protecting at all costs the Planet of Bread and the founders of The Bread Company’s secret recipe. In this whirlwind of activity, Randy is knocked out multiple times and left to flounder in distant worlds. Will he ever return to earth and the simple part-time job he initially applied to do?

Andrew Zellgert’s science fiction fantasy for young adults, The Bread Company, is a fascinating read. Told mostly through dialogue and minimal descriptive narrative, the story is fast-paced and creatively entertaining. The plot begins with the introduction of the mystery and the hard drive that must be protected since it contains the last known copy of the famous bread recipe that everyone wants to possess and exploit. With action-driven dialogue that not only develops the many unique characters, but also sets the stage for the action which follows, the story unfolds quickly as the reader follows Randy’s adventures and journey into space. It’s interesting how the author presents a diverse cast of characters, like Tabby the cat. His simple ploy of creating a world full of magically enhanced characters introduces young readers to many creative ways of facing the world and accepting others in spite of their differences. The story is engaging and subtly educational."

(For the entire trilogy)

An enthralling tale seasoned with fun, adventure, and SF intrigue…

Zellgert’s latest follows the adventures of an unlikely hero, who finds himself entangled in a horde of life-and-death situations after he joins a restaurant workforce. Randy is just an ordinary guy trying to find an average job. When he joins the Bread Company, he has no idea his life will change forever. What begins as a simple gig quickly becomes a dangerous intergalactic adventure. With the enemies trying to get their hands on the inscription of the founder’s recipe, Randy and his teammates know they must hurry or risk facing failure. Zellgert’s fast-paced narration pulls readers into an adventurous story of SF intrigue. Randy’s struggles with his self-doubts, vulnerabilities, and his exasperation at his teammates’ behavior make him a thoroughly relatable, flesh-and-blood character. The secondary cast is equally compelling, with Zellgert successfully channeling their senseless quirks. At times, the story jumps between multiple storylines, but Zellgert effortlessly ties up all the loose threads, creating a satisfying ending. An entertaining, well-paced intergalactic adventure.

Action packed and creative. All Randy wanted was a part-time job at a bakery. Instead, he finds himself in a world filled with strange creatures all trying to find a magical bread recipe. Then the bakery takes off and becomes a spaceship!

Lots of action, mostly conveyed through dialogue, this book can get almost silly at times. But it is a quick read that keeps moving. Very imaginative!

The Bread Company is Book 1 of a SciFi Story by Andrew Zellgert. I thought that this book was fun. Randy had always wanted to work at the bread company, but he was in for a wild time. This story has adventures, robots, and lots of odd characters. I felt that the length of the book was perfect for late elementary/or middle school. I thought that the author did a great job keeping the story moving and interesting. I believe that the readers will be excited to read sequels. I received an arc for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.
